WINNERS - Win 1 of 3 Silva full-spec Expedition S compass Competition

© Silva

Silva has released a new version of its full-spec Expedition S compass with a substantially reduced carbon footprint. The Terra Expedition S now uses a case, grip ring and graduation ring made from Revo material which combines recycled polypropylene with natural hemp fibres, resulting in 90% less carbon emissions.

Mirror sighting compasses excel when it comes to precision and accuracy, and the Terra Expedition S comes loaded with features.

It features an easy-handling housing, silicon rubber feet for map stability, luminous markings for low-light or night navigation, a magnifying lens, map-measuring scales in mm or inches, 1:25,000, 1:50,000 and GPS scales, plus a built-in adjuster for magnetic declination (including permanent local adjustment). The Expedition S can also map-measure 1:40,000 and it comes with a clinometer for measuring slope angles.

The mirror allows you to view the compass dial and background at the same time, making for more accurate bearings. A mirror-sighting compass comes into its own when determining direction over long distances.

The slope card is great for detecting avalanche risk; the probability increases if the slope is steeper than 30 degrees. It is also useful in determining how challenging your direction might be; knowing the slope angle will be helpful in judging the extra time that it will take to cover a distance.

The Terra Expedition S comes with a detachable scale lanyard made of recycled polyester, that works as a ruler. The lanyard has 1:25 and 1:50 scales printed on it; place directly on the map to measure the distance of your route.
